TAX EXAMINING TECHNICIAN(Planning and Special Program Technician)

WHAT DOES A TAX EXAMINING TECHNICIAN DO? As a Tax Examining Technician you will be responsible for processing all types of individual and/or business master file taxpayer initiated inquiries, claims, and internally generated adjustments. You may also be involved in processing non-master file and/or individual retirement account master file inquiries and claims, as well. As a Planning and Special Program Technician you will:
Performs a wide variety of technical and non-technical duties in support of programs and workload of the Area Planning and Special Programs function. Uses a variety of internal and external research systems to gather necessary information to assist the Program Coordinators, other PSP team members and/or various levels of management. Systems may include, but are not limited to, AIMS, ERCS, IDRS, Accurint and any other available and authorized system. Maintains files for various programs and initiatives within the Planning and Special Programs section in the Area office. Takes appropriate action to ensure the status of all file information is current and accurate. Updates AIMS and/or ERCS database information as necessary. Checks in and updates all incoming work to the group. Updates case controls to accurately reflect the routing/assignment of each case. Verifies all information on inventory validation lists (IVL). Takes appropriate action to identify and correct all problems associated with the IVL. Elevates unusually difficult or complex problems to a senior Coordinator or the Supervisor for resolution. Supports PSP program Coordinator by reviewing IDRS/AIMS printouts and transcripts. Duties may also include a variety of tasks associated with initiating program work, closing tax returns, or establishing controls for examination purposes. These duties may also include assisting with preparing and monitoring ESTAB requests, and surveying tax returns on which no further action will be taken. Duties include reviewing reports for distribution to Program Coordinators or various levels of management. Performs second sorts of incoming mail to determine appropriate routing. Responsible for assisting and supporting work assignments within the group. You must have 1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Providing technical assistance on systemic problems and inconsistencies to group members. Reviewing and updating AIMS/ERCS or tax accounts to resolve case problems; experience applying a wide range of tax law, regulations and rulings related to IMF, BMF or NMF returns in order to identify taxpayer issues and determine appropriate resolution, works with statute of limitation regulations, procedures and criteria in order to ensure government interests are protected. ORYou may substitute education for specialized experience as follows:
A Bachelor's degree or four (4) years of education above high school in any field of study from an accredited college or university.GS-6 LEVEL:
You must have 1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Experience providing technical assistance on systemic problems and inconsistencies in the IRM; experience applying a wide range of tax law, regulations and rulings related to IMF, BMF or NMF returns in order to identify taxpayer issues; Analyzing and reviewing IDRS tax accounts to determine steps to correct discrepancies, and experience with on-line systems, research materials, technology, and tools to resolve taxpayer's issues. Analyzing and reviewing the effects of new transactions on existing tax account records; works with statute of limitation regulations, procedures and criteria in order to ensure government interests are protected.GS-7 LEVEL:
You must have 1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
Experience using procedures related to tax processing, (e.g., Receipt of tax payments, SFR's, and establishing/closing cases); Experience applying a wide range of tax law, regulations and rulings related to IMF, BMF or NMF returns in order to identify taxpayer issues; Analyzing tax accounts, inventory validation lists (IVL), and/or AIMS/ERCS reports (e.g., GII and Mismatched reports) to make necessary corrections; Providing advice on, document processing difficulties related to taxpayer issues, and experience with on-line systems, research materials, technology, and tools to resolve taxpayer's issues. Experience reviewing the effects of new transactions on existing tax account records to analyze multiple transactions, determine the reasons for any systemic rejects, and take the appropriate actions necessary to correct any problems. Works with statute of limitation regulations, procedures and criteria in order to ensure government interests are protected.For Grades 5 through 7:
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions. - The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-timework is considered on a prorated basis.- To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week, on your resume. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
