Position Summary Environmental chemical or non-chemical stressors have been found not only alter the health of exposed organisms but also the health and behavior of offspring across several generations.
Dr.
Bhandari's research concerns the transgenerational inheritance of environmentally induced adverse health outcomes.
The research group of Dr.
Bhandari has demonstrated that environmentally induced non-genetic imprints can be transmitted vertically from one generation to the other across several generations.
Dr.
Bhandari has received long-term funding from the National Institutes of Health R01 mechanism to determine developmental stages that are susceptible to environmental chemicals and design epigenome editing tools (CRISPR-dCas9) to remove non-genetic imprints.
The overall goal of the project is to determine bisphenol A (BPA, a chemical constituent of plastics)-induced epigenetic imprints in the developing germ cells (that produce eggs and sperm later in life) and remove them by epigenome editing using CRISPR-dCas9 tools using medaka fish as a biomedical animal model.
Bioinformatic analysis of sequence data is one of the components of the funded project.
The incumbent will participate in the study, prepare samples for next-generational sequencing (if necessary), develop analysis pipelines including an artificial intelligence program, analyze next-generation sequencing data, attend/present in the scientific meetings, write/publish research papers, and indirectly mentor graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in the Bhandari Laboratory.
